Squarelly's in-app messaging system is built to keep your communications private, organised, and secure — from the moment a chat is unlocked to the point a tenancy is agreed.
How In-App Messaging Works
When the 2% contact fee is processed and a chat is unlocked, communication between renter and landlord takes place within the Squarelly platform. Neither party needs to exchange personal contact details — phone numbers, email addresses, or otherwise — before they're comfortable doing so.
Why Keeping Communication On-Platform Matters
Squarelly strongly recommends keeping conversations within the platform, particularly in the early stages of contact. In-platform messages:
- Create a clear, documented record of what was agreed or discussed
- Can be referenced in the event of a dispute
- Are subject to Squarelly's terms of use, giving both parties a layer of accountability
- Reduce the risk of being redirected to external channels where scam activity is harder to detect or report
What Squarelly Does Not Do
Squarelly does not read, monitor, or share the content of private messages between renters and landlords. Your conversations are your own.
However, when abuse is reported, Squarelly's team may review relevant message history as part of investigating the report. This is done solely to assess reported violations and protect platform integrity.
Protecting Yourself Within Chat
A few practices that help keep your experience safe:
- Do not share sensitive personal information early — avoid sharing financial details, your home address, or ID documents through chat before a tenancy is being actively progressed
- Be cautious of requests to move off-platform quickly — legitimate landlords and renters have no reason to immediately redirect communication to external apps or channels
- Never transfer money based on a chat request alone — Squarelly has no role in rent or deposit transactions; any instruction to pay via an unfamiliar link or method should be treated as a red flag
- Report anything that feels wrong — use the Report function in any chat to flag suspicious behaviour
Reporting Abusive or Suspicious Messages
If you receive messages that are threatening, abusive, or suggest the other party is misrepresenting themselves — such as a registered landlord appearing to act as an unlicensed agent, or a renter who appears to be using another person's identity — report it immediately using the Report option within the chat or by contacting support via our support form.
All reports are reviewed by the Squarelly team. Accounts found in violation of platform terms are suspended or permanently removed.
