Squarelly requires all renters to complete identity verification before they can initiate contact with a landlord or property manager. Here's what that means for you — and what it doesn't mean.
What Verification Confirms
When a renter's profile displays a verified badge, it means they have successfully completed identity verification through Stripe Identity — Squarelly's verification provider. The process includes:
- Submission of a valid government-issued photo ID (passport, national ID card, or driving licence)
- A selfie or liveness check confirming the ID belongs to the person who submitted it
This confirms that the person behind the profile is a real, identifiable individual — and that their identity has been cross-checked against their submitted documents.
What Verification Does Not Confirm
Identity verification is an important trust layer, but it has limits. Verification confirms who a renter is — it does not confirm:
- Their financial situation or ability to pay rent
- Their rental history or references
- Their suitability as a tenant beyond identity
You should still conduct your own due diligence during the tenancy process, including requesting proof of income, employment references, and previous landlord references as appropriate.
Why It Matters for You
As a landlord, knowing that every renter who contacts you has passed identity verification means:
- Reduced risk of fake or anonymous enquiries
- Greater confidence in who you're communicating with
- A clearer accountability trail if any issues arise
Reporting Identity Concerns
If you have reason to believe a verified renter is not the person they claim to be — for example, if the individual you meet does not match the profile or documents on record — report this immediately using the Report option in the chat or by contacting support team via our support form.
Squarelly takes identity misuse seriously. Accounts found to be using another person's verified identity are permanently removed from the platform.
